
John "JJ" Joseph Ruel, aged 75, passed away on October 16, 2025. John was a long-time resident of Punta Gorda, Florida, where he lived for 28 years. He was born on September 1, 1950, in Brockton, Massachusetts, to Evariste and Winnifred (DeSilva) Ruel.
John graduated in 1968 from Silver Lake Regional High School in Kingston, Massachusetts. He attended The U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs in 1968 and later graduated from Bridgewater State College in 2004. He proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1969 to 1975 and in the U.S. Army from 1978 to 1980.
John was an active member of the Hanson Athletic Association and the American Legion Post 103 in Punta Gorda, Florida. He was also a life member of the DAV 82 in Port Charlotte, Florida, and participated in the Florida Half Century Senior Softball and the Charlotte County Softball League. Additionally, he was a member of Shorty's Breakfast Club. His favorite job in Punta Gorda was at Biehl's Slip-Not Lounge and Mobile Home Park.
John is survived by his wife of 46 years, Lynne (Whitney) Ruel, his daughter Dawn Lisa (Nick) Clark, and his grandson Joshua Clark. He is also survived by his brothers William (Billy) Ruel and Dennis Ruel, his sister Donna (Don) Hobbs, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
A Celebration of Life for John will take place on January 24, 2026 at 11AM at The American Legion Post 103 in Punta Gorda, Florida.
