Kim was born on January 14, 1955 in Lakewood New York. From the beginning, she was the kind of person whose calling in life was to love and help others and whose empathy was unmatched. As a child, she once brought home a puppy - but her father wouldn't let her bring it in the house. Unable to listen to such a helpless thing whimper all night in the garage, she too began sleeping in the garage until her parents relented and let the dog sleep in her room.
She attended college at the university of Miami, where she met the love of her life Chris Pflaum, at 19. Together, they shared 50 wonderful years filled with travel, laughter, lots of dogs, and eventually their daughter and grandson.
As an adult, Kim's innate drive to be a helper called her into medicine, where she worked as a respiratory therapist in the NICU. After retiring to stay home with her daughter, Kim became an active volunteer, rising to leadership ranks in state and local PTAs, helping at the clothing exchange, and cooking for the homeless coalition.
Kim was the most incredible mother. Her loving, kind, patient nature made her slow to anger and quick to forgive. She was an incredibly involved parent, always the first to sign up to chaperone a field trip, host a school party, or help with a sports team. Her empathy and compassion made her an incredible listener and the best shoulder to cry on.
Kim and Chris eventually relocated to Punta Gorda, Florida to be closer to their daughter. Kim’s patient, quiet style made her an excellent fisherwoman and she almost always brought in the biggest catch on the boat. She could often be found passing time on the dock in the back of her house trying to land the enormous black drum that swam underneath.
Earlier this year, Kim finally became a grandma. She was the best grammy in the whole world. Her love and adoration for her grandson jack was apparent to everyone who spoke with her. He was her favorite topic of conversation and her "best good thing". She bought him presents, smothered him with kisses, held him through his fussiest moments.
Kim was preceded in death by her father Roland, mother Violet, sisters Lynn Penn (Tom) and Jill Bootey (John), and her baby brother Jimmy. She is survived by her husband Chris, daughter Laury (Jeff), grandson Jack, brother Ted (Vicki), and countless nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. She will be missed dearly by all who knew her, but her life and memory will live on through them.
A visitation for Kim will be held Saturday, November 11, 2023 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Kays-Ponger & Uselton Funeral Homes & Cremation Services, 635 E. Marion Ave, Punta Gorda, FL 33950, followed by a funeral service from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM.
