Evelyn Homan peacefully passed away on Saturday, December 7, 2013, at Clare Bridge Dementia/Alzheimer’s Center in Puyallup, Washington after successfully completing her mission in life. She was 96 years young.
Her mission was to be a loving, supportive wife to her husband, Ted Homan, for 68 years, successfully raise three children, Harley Homan (Baker City, Oregon), Deana Fiorino (Lakebay, WA) and Diane Proff (Edgewood, WA).
Evelyn was born in the farming community of Hingham, Montana in1917 to parents Ole and Nell Brevik. She had one sister and two brothers all of whom were deceased long ago. She was raised on her parents wheat farm and always talked about how she worked in her mother’s vegetable garden where much of the produce was given to others. Evelyn often stayed with her aunt Minn. and uncle Archie who lived close by and were very significant in her life.
The farming area regularly held community dances and Evelyn, as a teenager, would attend. It was at one of these dances she met a handsome young man who was playing in the band. As she tells it, it was Ted who first noticed her. The rest is history. In 1947, Evelyn, Ted, Harley and Deana moved to Puyallup and their new life began. Diane was born in1952.
Evelyn eventually became involved in every craft possible. She was a masterful seamstress, quilter, knitter, crocheter (only to name a few) and loved making things for family and friends. Food was important to the Homan group and she was a great cook and many wonderful meals were served. Evelyn was especially noted for her sense of humor and quick wit. Besides her family, she loved animals and children. Another of her pleasures was fishing. Somehow she always managed to out fish Ted and was quick to tell everyone the details.
Evelyn is survived by her three children, three grandchildren Neil Proff (Lake Stevens, Washington), Lynn Carter (Billings, Montana), and Andy Homan (Kasilof, Alaska), 6 great grandchildren, and 4 great great grandchildren.
The Homan family would like to thank the staff at Mill Ridge Assisted Living in Milton and those at the Clare Bridge Center for the dedicated service and loving care they rendered to Evelyn over her last few years. Also, we would like to show our appreciation to Hospice for their exceptional counseling and guidance to us. We feel blessed to have had such compassionate and caring support for Evelyn at the end her life’s journey.
A celebration of Evelyn’s life will be held at noon, Monday, December 16th at Charlie’s Restaurant (113 East Main, Puyallup).
