On October 25, 1939, Bernard Raphael Flores, affectionately known as Puddy, was born to Bernard Victor Flores and Isabella Maria Flores at 37 Sackville Street, Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, West Indies.
Puddy was raised in Trinidad and migrated to the United States as an adult, where he resided with his loving wife, Shirley, and their children, in Queens Village, New York. Prior to his migration to the United States, he worked in the music library at Radio Trinidad where he enhanced his knowledge for music; he was also a member of the Trinidad and Tobago Fire Department, both in Port-of-Spain and San Fernando. He was an auto mechanic by trade, working with Great Bear Auto and later worked as a courier before his retirement. Puddy dedicated over 30 years of service to the West Indian American Day Carnival Association (“WIADCA”). His service was instrumental to the development and celebration of Caribbean culture in New York. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, and friend.
Puddy’s greatest love, other than the love of family, was Music, a talent passed along through the generations. He was a Pan Aficionado Extraordinaire, and had the pleasure of playing music with many bands, including, The Merry Makers, Invaders, Zone Stars, Mello Harps, and Silhouettes. In his later years, Puddy was the founder of The Golden Harps International Steel Orchestra, in which he used to enrich many lives. He had the pleasure of being mentored by Ellie Mannette, and mentored Rudy Smith (“Two Left”), as well as others, too many to mention. He was happiest when playing music, especially with his brothers, family members and close friends. He loved life and lived it to the fullest!
Puddy was preceded in death by his parents, siblings (Louis, David, Everard, Lorraine, Curtis, Victor and Manuelita), and daughter Ann.
Together for over 60 years, Puddy is lovingly remembered by his beloved wife, Shirley; his eight children, Helena (Larry), Ava, Carlos (Christine), Bernadette, Andrea, Allison (Christopher), Victor (Rhonda) and Brent (Bina). He is left with cherished memories by his 23 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren, and a host of in-laws, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Puddy is also survived by his brother, Patrick, sisters Janet, Carmen, and other siblings.
He was transitioned into eternal rest on June 11, 2021.
Puddy was loved by all and will be missed by those who knew him.
The Flores Family would like to express our sincere gratitude and heartfelt thanks for your prayers and support during an exceedingly difficult time. We sincerely appreciate your sentiments of love. Please continue to pray for our family. May God continue to bless each of you.
