Carlo Stephen Chrispin, MD was born on July 1, 1941, in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. He was the fourth child of nine siblings born to his parents Aline Covil and Stephen Chrispin. He attended medical school at L’École de Médecine en Haïti in Port-au-Prince, graduating in 1968. After completing a one-year postgraduate internship, he had an opportunity to travel to the United States. He seized the opportunity and arrived in the United States in 1970. Coming to New York with less than $150 in his pocket, he settled in Brooklyn.
Carlo was extremely driven and determined to make a life for himself. He decided to study the English dictionary, listen to American music, and watch television programs to immerse himself in American culture to learn the English language. During that time, he met Maryse Jean-Baptiste at a party in Queens, whom he married shortly after. A cosmopolitan couple, Carlo and Maryse enjoyed international travel, fine dining, and cultural institutions together. They had two daughters, Kimberly and Jennifer.
After Carlo passed the medical board exam, he worked as a resident in New York, ultimately choosing to specialize in Internal Medicine and Geriatrics and becoming a licensed physician in 1978. He met his second wife Maria Genoveva Benipayo Rodriguez while they were both working at St. Mary's Hospital in Brooklyn. He respected her attention to detail and commitment to care, as they shared a love of learning and conscientiousness in their careers in medicine. Carlo and Maria had three children together: Stephanie, Carl Jonathan, and Jasmine. He later married Maria in 1997 and eventually settled in Williston Park, where Carlo lived for the remainder of his life.
He will be remembered for his wit, knowledge, charm, passion for medicine, diligence, and being a provider for his family. His temper was as fierce as his love, and his deep laughter echoed in the hearts of many. Carlo was extremely proud of his accomplishments as an immigrant who came to this country with nothing but determination. He is the true embodiment of the American Dream—with a lot of hard work, you can accomplish anything.
