It is with great sorrow that the Family announces the passing of Dr. Luzviminda (“Minda”) Sunga Santangelo. Our proud and unflinching mother of sons CarloVito, Vincent, and Christopher – and fiercely loyal and dependable wife of Col (Dr.) Vincent V. Santangelo – passed away at 12:07pm on the sixteenth of December, 2017 after a sudden and unexpected illness. She drifted peacefully and painlessly into the Infinite with all four of her “boys” at her side.
In addition to her husband and sons, “Minda” is survived by Carlo’s wife Danielle and their son Remy, as well as Chris’s wife Shannon and their son Jackson and daughter Nya.
The daughter of agricultural landowner Anacleto and school teacher Dionisia Benitez Sunga, Dr. Santangelo was born in Sultan Kudarat, Mindanao, Philippines on February 13th, 1953. She worked hard at her studies and eventually rose to the level of physician, receiving her medical degree from Far Eastern University, Dr. Nicanor Reyes Medical Foundation in 1977. While engaged in her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University, she met her future husband Vincent who was studying there as a medical student. The two were married in Vincent’s senior year, just prior to him receiving his medical degree in 1982. Upon emigrating to the United States, Minda eventually specialized in Pediatrics and practiced this specialty until the onset of her illness. She always put the needs of her Family, Friends, and Patients way ahead of her own. Great friend to everyone who knew her, she was the Light to which we were all drawn.
To everyone she knew, she was a surgeon, pediatrician, and dispenser of cures. Always professional, stunning, and stylish; she was also a cook, a baker, and a proud Colonel’s wife!
Mahal Ka Namin (We love you) Mama. We WILL see you again.
Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, December 19th from 5 – 9pm at the R. Stutzmann & Son Funeral Home, 224-39 Jamaica Avenue, Queens Village, NY 11428.
