Rafael Valdes was a loving husband, a caring father of three, and a proud grandfather to five grandchildren. Originally from Colombia, he came to the United States to serve in the United States Marine Corps and was stationed in Vietnam. He had a deep passion for chess and achieved the distinction of becoming a Chess Master.
