Born to Neil J. Gillis and Anna (Beaton) Gillis, she was raised in South Boston where she attended the Cardinal Cushing Central High School for Girls. During her youth, she took frequent trips to her parents’ native Nova Scotia to visit her grandparents farm and made many fond memories that she carried throughout her life.
Doris worked over 30 years at Logan Airport for Flying Tigers and FedEx. She formed many cherished friendships with her coworkers, many of whom she remained in contact with after her retirement in 2000. She was family-oriented and was always willing to lend a hand to her relatives. In retirement, she often babysat her two grandsons while their parents were at work and would often take them bowling, fostering their love of the sport. She was also a strong defender of equal rights and was proud to have cast her last presidential vote for the United States’ first female Vice President, Kamala Harris.
Doris had a deep love for animals and rescued numerous cats and dogs over the years, including her most recent cat, Peg. In her personal time, she enjoyed reading, doing crossword puzzles, and playing the lottery.
She is survived by her daughter, Laura Kubit of Quincy, her grandsons, Steven Kubit of Quincy, and Anthony Kubit of Salem, NH, her sister Constance Hutchings of Whitman, and her brothers Peter Gillis of Boston and Lawrence Gillis of Milton. She is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her ex-husband, James T. Dowd of Boston. She was also predeceased by her sisters, Mary Gillis, Rose Liberty, Marguerite Gillis, and Kathleen Ridge, and her brothers, John Gillis and James Gillis.
