
He was born in Taishan, Guangdong Province, China on November 3, 1931. As a young man he settled with his family in Hong Kong in 1950. He wed his beloved wife of 67 years, Lai Fong (Chin) Lui, in 1953. Shortly thereafter, in 1955, the couple set out for the United States, settling in Boston.
Robert was a restauranteur, having worked in several Chinese and Polynesian restaurants popular in their time. In 1970, he opened the Ba-Hia Restaurant in Walpole, MA, which had a successful run until his retirement in 1989. He loved to travel, often with friends, and especially to visit his wife’s Seattle families. He was active in his community, a member of the Que Sing Music and Opera Club, and in 1983 served as the 1st post revival Chair of the Soo Yuen Association of NE, an organization formed for the social, cultural and educational needs of the Fong, Kwong and Louie families.
He was predeceased by his brothers, the late George Lui and wife Mamie; and the late Harry Lui and his wife the late Lui Lim Gin Gee.
In addition to his beloved wife, Lai Fong Lui, he is survived by three sons, Richard Lui and his wife, Helen, of Medfield, Raymond Lui and his wife, Theresa, of Brookline, and Randall Lui and his wife, Helen, of Framingham; six devoted grandchildren, Jeffrey, Brian, Tim, Kylie, Tyler, and Ted Lui and his wife, Sou, of Boston.
Deware Funeral Home, of 576 Hancock Street, Quincy, MA shall be assisting with funeral arrangements. Services and burial shall be private. Interment will take place at Forest Hills Cemetery.
