Al proudly served in the U.S. Air Force where he worked as a mechanic and computer technician. After the service he met his wife Elizabeth after a service call to fix her key punching machine. Together they had three children all a year apart. In 1971 he packed them up in a wood paneled Kingswood Station Wagon to the “small country town” of Raleigh, NC. He would call the Triangle area his home for the rest of his life.
Al worked as a computer programmer for IBM for over 30 years. He loved swimming with his kids and grandkids, building computers, boating, fishing, going to the beach, traveling, playing Bridge, researching his Scottish lineage, and watching the Dallas Cowboys (and subsequently yelling at the TV).
He was a dedicated family man and worked tirelessly to make sure his children had everything they needed growing up. He stayed active in their lives coaching their soccer teams, teaching them to swim, taking them camping, and being a great dad and role model. He was a fantastic grandfather and was adored by his grandkids who affectionately knew him as “Pap-Pap”.
Al is survived by his former wife, Elizabeth Catherine Poole; his brother Robert Poole; his daughter and her spouse Bonnie and Richard Checkan; his son and spouse Barry and Dawn Poole; his son Byron Poole; and his three beloved grandchildren Kaitlyn, Wyatt, and Marissa Checkan. He was preceded in death by brother Gregory Poole.
For those unable to attend the service in person - live streaming will begin by 12:55 pm through the Facebook Page of Mitchell Funeral Home at Raleigh Memorial Park.
