Allan Hamilton Edwards

Allan H. Edwards died quietly overnight following complications from a recent stroke and weakened by a four year battle with dementia. He was born in a farm home in Stone Creek, OH to William Lindsay Edwards III and wife Billie (McCleary) Edwards and moved at a young age to Magnolia, OH where he would live until graduating from Magnolia High School. Allan was an avid student of the sciences and shop class. Spending long hours after school, he learned to fix machines and do woodworking, skills he would hone the rest of his life.

While attending Ohio Wesleyan University, he joined the Marine Corps where he excelled in electronics as a radio technician stationed in San Diego and Miami. After his service, in 1955 he married his childhood sweetheart, Donna Jean Clemens, and soon began his career at IBM in Canton, OH. After IBM moves to Rochester, MN and Poughkeepsie, NY; Allan settled his family in the Raleigh area in 1970 where he worked as a computer diagnostics equipment designer until he retired from IBM in 1993.

In retirement Allan stayed fit through meticulous yard work and ingenious garage workshop projects, donated his significant talents to maintenance projects at St Philips Lutheran Church, played occasional golf with the guys, travelled with his wife and area friends Joe and Sharon Purdue, and doted proudly on his grandson.

Allan was preceded in death by his parents, his older sister Phyllis Salvatore and his first son, Jeffrey Allan Edwards. Surviving relatives include his loving wife of 59 years, Donna Edwards, a sister Imogene Van Zant of Gaithersburg, MD; a son Jerold Edwards of Somerville, NJ; a daughter Jennifer Dolan of Raleigh, and a grandson Colin Dolan of Raleigh.

A memorial service will be held at Springmoor Retirement Community 1500 Sawmill Rd, Raleigh, NC 27615 on Sunday, August 31 at 2:00pm. Immediately following the service there will be a reception potluck to share memories of our good times with Allan.
