Alton Edwards Howard passed away on December 7th, 2020. He was born February 23, 1930 in Robersonville, NC to the late Clyde Alvah Howard and Flora Edwards Howard. Alton was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather.
He grew up in Greenville, NC, and attended East Carolina University before enlisting in the Air Force. He became a B-29 pilot and was stationed in Japan during the Korean War. After returning to the US, he was stationed at Lincoln Air Base in Nebraska where he met his bride, Ramona Walgreen. He was honorably discharged from the US Air Force after serving from
1951-1955. With his new wife, he returned home to Greenville to complete his degree at ECU. He moved to Raleigh to begin his career as a CPA with Lynch and Howard. Along with managing a successful CPA firm, Alton also served on several boards and committees including, the Raleigh Jaycees, the AE Finley Foundation, Raleigh Golf Association, Wake County Advisory Board overseeing Yates Mill Park, Investment Advisory Board of the Poole Endowment Funds at NC State University, JC Raulston Arboretum Advisory Board, Bethesda Lutheran Home in Watertown, Wisconsin where he served for 19 years, and the State Employees Retirement Fund Equities Committee as Vice Chairman for 20 years. As a devoted member of Our Savior Lutheran Church, he served as President, Treasurer, and on numerous committees.
Alton enjoyed traveling with his young family across the country, visiting every state and several trips to Canada. He also enjoyed traveling overseas to Australia, Italy, and South Africa. He was an avid Wolfpack fan and traveled to many Bowl games and ACC tournaments. His favorite spot was sitting on the deck at his home on Lake Gaston.
Alton is survived by his wife of 65 years, Ramona Walgreen Howard; sons, Matt Howard of Virginia Beach; Pat Howard and wife, Lesa, of Garner; daughter Karen Stevens and husband, Roger, of Raleigh; and eight grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 2 brothers, 2 sisters; his son Timothy Howard; and grandson Nathan Howard.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, December 12th at 12pm at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Raleigh with a reception to follow. A graveside service will be held at 2pm at Raleigh Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Our Savior Lutheran Church.
