A retired dentist, Dr. Lewis was born on September 14, 1944 in Charleston, SC, to the late Henry E. Lewis and Mary Dorothy Bail Lewis. He is now reunited with his parents along with his big brother, Henry E. Lewis, Jr.; cousins, Mary Peek, Norma Warner, Chauncey Stokes, Mildred Graham; uncle, Arthur Bail, who all predeceased him.
Raised in St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Charleston, SC, Arthur was extremely special and there are no words in any earthly language to describe all of his incredible qualities. He was everything great and the best father anyone could ever ask for. He was principled and with him nothing was impossible. He had a sense of duty, serving in the United States Army, never forgetting his friends who were lost. He was sentimental and longed for the good old days of Charleston. He never met a stranger and would wave a friendly hello and engage in sincere conversations with everyone.
He had a thirst for knowledge, receiving an AD degree in Electronics Engineering from Trident Tech, a B.S. in Biology from the College of Charleston and a DDS from Georgetown University School of Dentistry.
Survivors include his loving wife, Yvonne Bell Lewis of the home, his son, Arthur Walter Lewis, Jr. of Raleigh, NC, a daughter, Dorothy Yvonne Lewis of Rocky Mount, NC and two grandchildren, Skylar Yvonne Gregg-Lewis and Randall Arthur Gregg-Lewis. Also surviving are his brother-in-law Clarence Bell (Hazel) and sisters-in-law, Margaret Hawkins, Jacqueline Pyatt, Linda Strickland (William), Catherine Bell, Patricia Bell, Joni Roan and Eila Lewis, as well as a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
A Celebration of Life and Homecoming was held on Saturday, August 30, 2025 at 2:30pm in the Chapel Mausoleum at Raleigh Memorial Park, 7501 Glenwood Avenue, Raleigh, NC 27612. Burial followed in the Christus Gardens in the cemetery.
