Audrey Adams Barringer

Audrey Adams Barringer passed away on Friday, January 29 after 88 wonderful, fulfilling and healthy years, following a brief illness. Audrey was born in Florence, SC and graduated from Winthrop College as a math major. She was married to Thad Jones Barringer, Sr. They settled in Raleigh in 1960.

She served in numerous capacities in the Wake County Medical Auxiliary and the Women’s Club. She loved her bridge clubs and book clubs and was an avid bird and wildflower enthusiast. In the summer, Audrey divided her time between Raleigh and her farm in the NC mountains. She loved her dogs and many other pets over the years.

Audrey nurtured her four children: Ann, Thad, Kennon and Betsy, and molded them to be strong, loving and caring individuals. Audrey hosted a continuous open house and kitchen for her many friends, as well as for so many of her children’s, and even her grandchildren’s, friends.

Audrey touched the lives of many. Her spirit lives on in the hearts of the family she leaves behind. Her children: Ann and Roddy Story, Thad and Gwen Barringer, Kennon and Lisa Barringer, Betsy and Roger Hoaglund and her grandchildren: Roddy and Crandall Story, Elizabeth Story, Rebecca and Kirby McCleary, TJ and Jessie Barringer, Nick and Merritt Barringer, William Barringer and Michelle Barringer; and great- grandchildren: Walker Story, Katie McCleary, Jones Barringer and Haynes Barringer.

A service will be held celebrating Audrey’s life on Saturday, January 31, 2015 at 11:00 am at Hayes Barton United Methodist Church, 2209 Fairview Rd., Raleigh. A visitation will follow the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to The Nature Conservancy, Audubon Society or Transitions LifeCare (formerly Hospice of Wake County), 250 Hospice Circle, Raleigh, NC 27607.
