Ben Hassell Grimes

Our Big Ben is silent. After a stay of 14 months in Rex Rehab & Nursing Care Center, Ben Hassell Grimes died on November 7, 2016. He was the youngest child of George and Nora Grimes of Martin County, born September 25, 1925. Ben was predeceased by brothers, George and Robert and sisters, Nora Roberson and Viola Tetterton.

Ben was educated in the Martin County Schools and was a graduate of the Lay Academy of Barton College. He served his country in the early fifties with the United States Air Force. Ben’s career extended for approximately 40 years with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol; it included climbing radio towers, becoming a Radio Dispatcher and concluding as the Radio Parts Supervisor. After retirement he was the Eastern NC Transportation Supervisor with the Bank of America. Ben concluded his working years as a small business person, running a lawn service for residential and business customers in the Raleigh area.

Ben was a member of Hillyer Memorial Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) where he served in various capacities, including the Eldership. A funeral service will be held at Hillyer Memorial Christian Church, 718 Hillsborough St., Raleigh at 11 am Saturday, November 12, 2016 with the Reverend David Mallory officiating. Visitation with the family will be held 1-3 pm Friday, November 11, 2016 at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home 300 Saint Mary’s St. Raleigh, NC 27605. Polly, his wife of 65 years, and his son, Neill and Virginia, and their family Jane and Mario Oliver and Ben M. Grimes, Jr., invite you to attend.
