Betty S. Cranor, 79, passed away peacefully Monday evening with her son at her side. Born Betty Frances Surles in Johnston County, she was the daughter of the late Fulton Surles and Elma Ellen Surles.
Betty loved life, was dedicated to her family and truly appreciated her friends from church to the arts and especially music. A member of the church choir for decades, she sang opera and performed with many musical groups over the years,but always had a special place for the Gospel hymns she grew up with.
After attending Peace College, she completed her degree at East Carolina University. Betty retired with over 30 years of service in State Government. She was North Carolina Director of Services for the Blind and also served many years in Vocational Rehabilitation. Betty was a Certified Counselor and chaired many activities over the years including those in public service and charities.
Betty was the wife and love of the late Frank T. Cranor, Jr.
Survivors include her son, Sam Cranor and his wife, Connie of Mooresville; sister, Fannie Lou Beasley and husband, R.J. of Dunn; brother, Dan Surles and his wife, Brenda of Wake Forest; grandsons, Weston Cranor of Charlotte, Blake Cranor of Wilmington, and Zachary Cranor of Mooresville.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Edward Surles and John “Pat” Surles.
A memorial service will be held Friday, February 22, 2019 at 2:00 pm at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, Raleigh. The family will receive friends in the church parish hall, after the service. Interment will be private.
