Bobby spent his early childhood in Mount Gilead, NC where he graduated from Mount Gilead High School in 1957. Upon high school graduation, Bobby and his twin brother enlisted in the U.S. Army and served our country for two years in the 3rd Infantry Division. After basic training, Bobby was stationed in Germany and had the honor of meeting Elvis Presley. Elvis was also in the Army at this time and stationed at the same location. Bobby was a huge Elvis fan.
After Bobby’s time in the Army, he and his twin brother both decided to further their education and attended Brevard College for two years. During Bobby’s time at Brevard, he was a member of the Brevard Baseball team where he was a star pitcher for the team. Once completing his two-year degree at Brevard College, Bobby went on to attend N.C. State University. The baseball coach at N.C State tried to recruit Bobby, but he decided to retire from his baseball career and put all his efforts towards his higher education. Bobby graduated with honors from N.C. State University with degrees in Chemistry and Food Science.
While attending N.C. State University and living in Raleigh, Bobby met the love of his life, Tonia. They met through a friend of Bobby’s twin brother at a social gathering. Tonia was in Raleigh working on a certification course at Wake Med Hospital for nursing school. After Tonia’s certification course ended, she moved back to her home in Charlotte, NC. Bobby was smitten with Tonia and continued to court her long distance, sending sweet love letters and making frequent trips to visit her in Charlotte. Bobby ended up capturing Tonia’s heart and they were married in 1965.
Upon Bobby’s graduation from N.C. State University, he moved to Charlotte, NC where he and Tonia both started their careers and a family. A few years later, a career opportunity brought Bobby and Tonia back to Raleigh, NC. The couple moved into Medfield Estates neighborhood, where they raised their children and met neighbors who became lifelong friends.
Bobby came from humble beginnings, but through his intelligence, strong work ethic and charisma he became a very successful man. His knowledge in the field of textile chemistry was sought after by many colleagues and professionals in the field. With the encouragement of his biggest supporter, Tonia, he started his own company, CBM Group of NC, Inc. in 1987. The company was very successful and one of Bobby’s most proud accomplishments.
Bobby loved traveling, the N.C. State Wolfpack, and was an adventurous eater who loved trying new cuisines. But, most of all Bobby was a kind, witty, generous man who loved his family and friends. He was an amazing husband, father, and grandfather. Bobby made a lasting impression on all the lives he touched.
