Bruce was born in Norton, Virginia, the youngest of George B.P. Mullin and Frances (Bartley) Mullin’s four boys. When he was a baby, Bruce’s family moved to New Hampshire with the U.S. Forest Service, where they lived for a while in the White Mountains National Forest in a one-room log cabin called the Fabyan Guard Station, which is a historic site today.
From the mountains and lakes of New Hampshire, the Mullin family moved to Roanoke, Virginia, then to Asheville, North Carolina, where Bruce made many lifelong friends at Lee Edwards High School. Bruce dearly loved his summer visits to his parent’s hometown in Greenville, Maine, where he played with his cousins, fished in Moosehead Lake, and worked in his uncle’s dairy farm.
Bruce studied forestry at North Carolina State University. For a while, Bruce worked at Barr-Mullin, with his brother Sandy, and used his gift of making friends with anyone to sell computerized wood processing equipment worldwide. Bruce founded B. E. Mullin & Co., Inc., in Raleigh, North Carolina in 1990.
Bruce married his love, Jacqueline Moffitt in 1975. They honeymooned in Greenville, Maine, Montreal, and Quebec. After living in Asheville, they settled in Raleigh. Bruce and Jackie enjoyed spending time at the Moffitt family farm in the mountains in Buladean, North Carolina, where Bruce drove an enormous tractor, split firewood, and harvested prolific vegetables. In retirement, they traveled to their favorite places, including Colorado, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine.
As an Elder at White Memorial Presbyterian Church in Raleigh, Bruce was honored to perform baptisms, and he helped build a seminary on mission trips to Mexico. Bruce found great joy in sailing, baking bread, and cooking Thanksgiving turkey for family and his friends whom he loved like family. Bruce was an accomplished craftsman, a weaver of stunning textiles, and a volunteer at the North Carolina Museum of History, demonstrating how to use the large, old-fashioned looms. With his white beard and infectious laugh, Bruce made a jolly Santa Claus for children in the neighborhood and at the museum.
Bruce is survived by his wife of 50 years, Jackie Mullin, and brother, Alexander (Sandy) Mullin. He will be fondly remembered by his nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless friends.
A Service of Witness to the Resurrection will be held at White Memorial Presbyterian Church in Raleigh on September 9, 2025, at 3:00 pm. The family will receive friends immediately following the service, in the Jane Bell Gathering space at the church.
