

Commander Smitty Roberson Harvell, U.S. Navy (Ret.), a lifelong Raleigh native, passed away peacefully on December 21, 2025. He was born Aug. 27, 1950, in Raleigh, North Carolina, to Erma Wilkins Harvell and Roberson Ab Harvell.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Keda Olive; and brothers, Richard Harvell and Mike Harvell.
Smitty is survived by his devoted wife of 47 years, Debbie Beach Harvell; daughter, Kelly Harvell Bush; son-in-law, Clayton Walter Bush; and beloved grandson, Beau Wilkins Bush.
A graduate of Enloe High School and North Carolina State University, Smitty was a true Raleigh native through and through. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy from Sept. 3, 1974 to Aug. 26, 2010, retiring with the rank of commander. During his distinguished military career, he served as an officer aboard the USS Kidd.
Along with his time in the navy, Smitty continued a life of service and mentorship as one of the founding teachers at Leesville Road High School. He taught woodshop and later transitioned to drafting, where he spent many years shaping the lives of students before retiring.
Smitty was a deeply devoted husband and father who took his roles seriously and lovingly. He was steadfast in his care and protection of his family, and poured his heart into the life he and Debbie built together. Their marriage was one marked by commitment, partnership and enduring love.
An exceptionally talented woodworker, Smitty found joy in creating with his hands. From furniture built in his home to pieces made for friends and family, his craftsmanship reflected his patience, skill and generosity. Among his most cherished creations were his birdhouses, which brought him particular pride and quiet satisfaction.
A service celebrating Smitty’s life will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, January 9, 2026 at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends immediately after the service in the church fellowship hall. A graveside service, with military honors, will follow the reception in the Veteran's Section of Oakwood Cemetery, 701 Oakwood Avenue, Raleigh.
