

Dale was born March 10, 1941 at Sibley Hospital in Arlington, VA. He lived in many cities in Virginia and North Carolina until settling in the Raleigh area in 1957. He graduated from Cary High School in 1959, attended Louisburg College and NC State University. He served in the North Carolina National Guard in the band and as a supply sergeant.
He was proud of his southern heritage from the Virginia counties of Southampton and Patrick, and has listed over 200 ancestors that served in the War Between the States. He was a member of the Wake Forest camp of The Sons of Confederate Veterans.
He married his late wife in 1965 and started his career at IBM Research Triangle Park from which he retired in 1992 as a telecommunications engineer. He is survived by his son, Kenneth (Andrea) and their children, Dylan and Rhiann of Raleigh; daughter, Tina Staples (Chris) and her sons Cameron Brown, Tyler and Alex Staples, all of Wake Forest.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Wilson Whitfield and Irene Woolwine Whitfield.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Dale's name to Sons of Confederate Veterans Camp 166, 9701 Fonville Road, Wake Forest, NC 27587.
