Dan A. Burleson, 69, of Raleigh, NC died unexpectedly at home on 10/2/10. He was born in Spruce Pine, NC on August 19, 1941. He attended Harris Elementary and Harris High School in Spruce Pine, graduating in 1959. He graduated in 1963 from Western Carolina College in Cullowhee, NC, majoring in history and political science, with an A.B. degree in Political Science.
He worked for the National Linen Service for two years. He worked for the North Carolina Employment Security Commission for six years, as an employment interviewer, employment counselor, and position classification analyst. He then began a long tenure at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as a classification analyst and wage hour officer before being promoted to Director, Employee Relations. He retired in 1991, after 27 years of service with the State of North Carolina. Since that time, he worked as a personnel consultant, timber management consultant, and a real estate manager in Raleigh.
He had many interests, including history, plants, books, cooking, Carolina Blue sports, the Redskins, horseback riding in the Montana Rockies, the North Carolina Coast, and life itself. He did things his way – this man WAS an island.
He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Laurinda Queen Burleson of Raleigh; his sons, Cameron Burleson of Chapel Hill and Allen Brooks Burleson, and wife, Kelly, and granddaughter, Holly Amanda Burleson of Raleigh. His brother, Melvin Douglas Burleson, his father, Landon “Cotton” Burleson, and his mother, Thelma Pittman Burleson, all of Spruce Pine, N.C. predeceased him.
Services will be private. No public service is planned.
