Born on September 24, 1948, in Fayetteville NC, to the late George and Mabel Cromartie, David lived his life defined by strength and kindness and showered his family with love and wisdom throughout his years.
David’s interests in sports and fitness were evident at a young age while participating in several high school sports teams at Enloe High School. This passion continued throughout his life to include participating in the Marine Corps Marathon and many others, countless days cycling mile after mile, basketball, golf, tennis, billiards, and racquetball. As well as graduating from North Carolina State University, David volunteered for the United States Army and served until 1978. With his skills and experience in accounting and numbers, he found his way to Professional Management Services in Raleigh where he accommodated his clients with 43 years of exceptional service before retiring in 2014.
His children remember his hard work and long hours during tax season but loved when he was able to slow down after April and spend time at their beach house located in Surf City, NC with the entire family. With a grin on his face, David would have a quick-witted joke ready for you, usually teasing those he loved just a little bit in the process. His humor, wisdom, and quiet, kind soul were present every time you would visit with him, always proud to talk about his children and grandchildren while showing pictures of what they had been up to recently. David’s love of animals was a testament to his patient and caring nature, always looking after their dogs and birds as well as rescuing a few along their life’s journey together.
David’s legacy of kindness and love lives on in his children, Julie Haas (Brandon) and Chris Cromartie (Dawn), and his grandchildren, Sydney Haas, Will Haas, Hannah Cromartie, and Edward Cromartie, and his siblings, brother George D. Cromartie of Mt. Pleasant SC, and sister Urbanna Gupton of Cary NC, his sister-in-law Delores Crotts Hining, and his nieces and nephews, Michelle Curry, Laura Wise, Kathy Chewning, Laura Cromartie, Caroline Braskamp, Jonathan Gupton, Jonathan Crotts, and Elizabeth Crotts. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Mabel Cromartie, his sister, Anne Burton, and his wife, Eleanor (Crotts) Cromartie.
The family will receive friends and guests on Monday, September 15, 2025, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 300 St Mary’s St, Raleigh, NC 27605.
