

He was born December 6, 1921, in New York, New York, the son of the late Rose Marie Chappell and Arthur Cole. He was the oldest of 3 siblings. Edward left college to join the United States Navy in 1942 and rose to the rank of Quartermaster First Class while serving in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He participated in the invasions of Kwajalein, Saipan, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. During the battle for Okinawa, his ship, the USS Samuel S. Miles, was damaged by a kamikaze airplane and was forced to return to the United States. After his discharge in 1946 he worked at various jobs while attending New York University, graduating in 1952 with a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering. In the same year, he married Ernestine Davis of New York. They enjoyed 43 years of life together. He moved to Ridgefield, Connecticut in 1954 and worked for the Asiatic Petroleum Company in New York City as an engineer from 1956 until his retirement in 1984. After his retirement, he and Ernestine moved to the Raleigh area where he devoted his time to his family, his model train display and his computer aviation simulation hobby.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Ellen and Richard Tim of Raleigh, North Carolina, his son and daughter-in-law Gene and Mary Jane Cole of Stafford, Virginia, his daughter-in-law Susan Brennan Cole of Durham, North Carolina, his son Edward L. Cole Jr. of Aston, Pennsylvania and seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Edward was preceded in death by his wife.
An Anglican service will be held Tuesday at Aquia Church in Stafford, Virginia, and his remains will rest beside his wife at St. Stephen's Church in Ridgefield, Connecticut.
