Married to Sidney Loy Gulledge, Jr. for fifty four years until his death in 2002, the couple moved to Raleigh with their three children and became active members of Edenton Street Methodist Church. There Betty served as a circle leader and president of the United Methodist Women. She was a member of the Junior League of Raleigh.
An avid golfer, Betty was president of the Carolina Country Club Ladies Golf Association and was the Ladies Club Champion in 1975 and 1976.
