Elizabeth Robertson Stoker

She was born at home in Raleigh on November 21, 1914, the second child of Susie Foster Stoker and Henry Robertson Stoker. She was a lifetime member of The Church of the Good Shepherd and was the first baby baptized in the present sanctuary on Hillsborough St. She attended Raleigh public schools and graduated from Hugh Morson High School, Saint Mary's College, and Hardbarger's Business College. She was a beloved employee of the Wake County Department of Social Services for 47 years, serving 39 of those years as administrative assistant to the then-Director of Social Services, Josephine Wilkerson Kirk.

Elizabeth was a member and long-time treasurer of the Wake County Historical Society. She was oldest member of “The Readers' Club” book club, and still enjoyed attending its monthly meetings. For many years after her retirement, she volunteered at Wake Relief, carrying on her legacy of community service. Elizabeth was an avid reader, excellent photographer, world traveler, and devoted Wolfpack fan. She and her sister, Susan, were patrons of the cultural arts in Raleigh, particularly the NC Symphony and Carolina Ballet.

She was preceded in death by both parents and her sister Susan Foster Stoker. She is survived by several cousins and a multitude of friends who loved her dearly and celebrated her Christian witness, her love of all children, her amazing curiosity and her fierce independence.

There will be a private burial service at 10am on Thursday, September 25th at Oakwood Cemetery, followed by a memorial service at 11am at The Church of the Good Shepherd. The family will receive friends following the service at the church.
