Ellis McLyle Meekins, 92 of Winston-Salem, NC passed away at his home on Tuesday, July 31, 2018. He was born on June 29, 1926 to Herbert and Geneva Meekins. Ellis was known to family and friends as Big Ellis and was preceded in death by his son Ellis M. Meekins, Jr., his parents, sister Geneva Cayton, and brother Herbert G. Meekins.
Ellis married Julia Mayo and briefly lived in Florida while serving in the Navy during WWII. After discharging from the Navy, Ellis attended the Police Academy in Louisville, Kentucky. After graduating from the police academy, the family moved to Raleigh, NC and he started his career in 1952 with the Raleigh Police Department. He retired in 1985 after 33 years of service with the distinguished rank of Major.
Ellis is survived by his wife Julia, daughter-in-law Anita Meekins, his grandson Scott Meekins and wife Bridgette, his granddaughter Heather M. Bailey and husband Matthew, and a great-granddaughter Bethany Meekins.
A graveside burial service will be held Saturday August 4, 2018 at 2:00pm at Raleigh Memorial Park, 7501 Glenwood Avenue (Hwy 70), Raleigh, NC 27612.
