Galina was born in Kharkiv, Ukraine, USSR, on June 18, 1934. She grew up in Kharkiv and in Rubtsovsk, Siberia, where her mother Dora Safris and stepfather Alexander Oksengendler were relocated to aid the war effort during the Nazi occupation of Kharkiv. She graduated from Kharkiv Agricultural Institute and worked for many years as a Civil Engineer. She married Gregory Duel in 1955. On July 25, 1978, the family left the Soviet Union as part of a large wave of Jewish refugees. They settled in Cleveland, Ohio and later moved to Framingham, Massachusetts, where Galina worked in electrical drafting and CAD.
In 1995, Galina joined her family in Cary, NC. She helped to raise her grandchildren, traveled extensively, maintained connections with friends and family around the world, and attended classical music concerts with friends in the Triangle area. She found great joy in physical activity and healthy living. She read avidly in both English and Russian and shared her interests with family members.
Galina passed away peacefully surrounded by a room full of family. She is survived by her loving daughter Sasha-Alexandra, son-in-law Hans, and grandchildren Mark (Ying), J-David, and Peter. We miss her beyond belief, and she will always remain close to our hearts. May her memory be a blessing on all those who had the joy of knowing her.
До свидания, мама, бабушка, сестра, тетя, подруга. Спасибо за все! Светлая память.
