At a young age George moved with his parents and two brothers to Boston, MA and then Newark, NJ, before settling in South Plainfield, NJ. It was there that he spent the next forty plus years. In 1975, he married Betty Grego and together they raised their children Rachel and Adam. After a brief attendance at Rutgers University, George started work as a machinist at Captive Plastics in Piscataway, NJ. He worked in that field for over 30 years, retiring in 2006.
George was a lover of sports. He played soccer and basketball in high school and always enjoyed attending sporting events. He was an avid Jets, Mets, Knicks, and Rangers fan. He loved to talk New York sports with anyone who would listen.
Other than George’s family and sports, he enjoyed listening to music and going to concerts. Music always seemed to be his way to connect with people. Whether it was the Eagles, The Band, Willie Nelson, John Prine, the Stones, Bob Dylan, or Simon and Garfunkel, he found true joy in listening to and appreciating good music. More than anything, George was easy going and always liked to have a good time. He was a friend to everyone.
George is survived by his brother Joe; daughter Rachel Modrak and her husband Eric of Apex NC; son Adam Makarewicz and his wife Emily (Robbins) of Stirling, NJ, and their children, Tilley (14), Henry (9), and Zachary (6).
George was preceded in death by his beloved wife Betty, whom he devotedly cared for until her death in 2013; his parents, Wiktor and Jozefa; and his brother, Thaddeus.
A visitation and reception was held on Friday, September 29, 2023 at Mitchell Funeral Home, Raleigh, NC.
Plans for a memorial gathering in New Jersey will be forthcoming.
