

Irvin Clay Young, 87, passed away into the presence of his Lord on September 19, 2011, at The Oaks of Mayview, Raleigh. He was born on March 26, 1924, in Danville VA, to his parents Nevils Pinkney Young and Dovell Robertson Young.
Irvin graduated from Durham High School, and entered the Army Air Corp, where he served until 1945. He then married the love of his life, Bessie Francis Council and attended North Carolina State University. Irvin worked for the Purina Company in Raleigh and then joined Wachovia Bank and Trust Company, where he retired from after 30 years, as an Assistant Vice President. He was a lifelong member of Forest Hill Baptist Church, President of Sir Walter Kiwanis’s Club (1972-73 and 1984-85), and coach of The Pepsi Bulldogs, his son’s little league football team. During retirement, Irvin and Bessie enjoyed playing golf and travelling together.
He is predeceased by his loving wife of 65 years, Bessie Council Young (June 14, 2011) and is survived by his daughters Ann Young Birdsall of Springfield, VA, and Jean Young of Apex, NC, his son Clay Young and his wife Mary of Sugarland, Texas; his grandchildren Heather Birdsall, Caroline Birdsall Cardino, and Camille Young; and his nieces and nephews, Dr. Beth Powell, William Powell, Dr. Sam Powell, Chris Council, Doug Council, Steve Anderson, Jan Anderson, and Lyn Howell; his sister, Ruby Young Anderson, of Alpharetta, GA, and his step-sister, Susan Kay Young, of Durham, NC. He was also preceded in death by his parents, his sister Irene Castle Young and his grandson Dylan Young.
The funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday September 24, 2011 at Mitchell Funeral Home, 7209 Glenwood Avenue, Raleigh. Interment with Military Honors will follow at Raleigh Memorial Park. The family will receive friends prior to the service.
