Born April 28, 1941, in Raleigh, NC to the late Sara H. and James R. Rogers, Jr., Jimmy practiced law for 50 years, raised children for nearly as long, and celebrated his life, family and friends every day. A graduate of Broughton High School and Wake Forest University undergrad and law school, his greatest passion beyond his family was Women’s Soccer. “Coach” began his 25 year career coaching his daughters’ recreational teams with CASL in 1978 and continued through classic travel levels and retired from coaching after serving as the Head Coach of Saint Mary’s School in 2003. His teams won multiple State Championships and were successful in Regional tournaments. He was named North Carolina Youth Soccer Coach of the Year in 1993 and was the first inductee into the CASL Hall of Fame in 2006. More than the accolades, he cherished most of all the relationships with all of his players.
Jimmy is survived by his wife of 51 years, Sara Webb Rogers, his four children, James R. Rogers IV and wife Anne, Sharon Ravenscraft and John Merritt, Sara Lindsay Kindem and husband Pete, and Katherine Simonsen and husband Mark, his eight grandchildren (Brad, Scott, John, Lindsay, Owen, Jay, Anna Katherine, and William James), and his beloved Golden Retriever Charlie.
The family thanks Dr. Todd Helton, the wonderful doctors and nurses in the Cardiac ICU at Rex, the folks at Heartland Hospice, particularly Julian “Mack Attack” Mack, his hospice aide, who became a welcome light during his illness.
