

Jane Pinkerton, 88, of Raleigh, formerly of Abingdon, VA died Friday, February 7, 2014. Jane was born in Jackson County, WV, to the late Herman Arthur Shutts and Ethel Bartlett Shutts. She received her B.A. at West Virginia University and her nursing degree from Johns Hopkins School of Nursing in 1950. Also in 1950, Jane married Dr. Herman Pinkerton. They lived most of their lives in Abingdon, VA, after Herman completed his medical training.
Jane was a devoted mother who was very involved at Sinking Spring Presbyterian Church in Abingdon. She loved her family, and her life-long love of the craft of sewing and providing many special keepsakes for her family and others. She was an avid dog-lover, bridge player, and photographer.
She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Herman H. Pinkerton, Jr. of Raleigh; her four daughters, Ellen Lynn Kruszewski (Tom) of Plantation, FL; Susan Jane Ballagh (John) of Leesburg, VA; Sarah Lee Gates (Jim) of Raleigh; and Marguerite Ann Fleenor (Don) of Durham, NC; 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; a niece, Patti Simmons (D.C.) of West Virginia; and nephew, George Harmison of Maryland.
She was predeceased in death by her sister, Nalda Harmison; and brother, Noel Shutts.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 15, 2014 at 2:00 pm at Springmoor Life Care Retirement Community’s Auditorium, 1500 Sawmill Rd. Raleigh, NC 27615.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Sinking Spring Presbyterian Church, the Humane Society, or the charity of one’s choice.
