
John was born on May 18, 1927 in Philadelphia, PA to John Victor Chism and Emma Kleyenstuber Chism.
John graduated from Frankford High School in Philadelphia in 1944 and served in the U.S. Navy before graduating from Penn State University in 1951 with a degree in electrical engineering. Following graduation, John moved to Endicott, NY to begin a career with IBM. While in Endicott he met his wife Mary Anne, a nurse at Ideal Hospital.
In 1965 John, Mary Anne, and their family were relocated to IBM’s new facility in Research Triangle Park where he eventually retired after 39 years.
John enjoyed bowling, loved to golf, play pinocle and bridge, and have family vacations at the beach. His recipe for Whiskey Sour Punch is famous.
Survived by his wife of 67 years Mary Anne (Walsh) Chism, their five children, Jack Chism, Tom Chism, Anne Becker, Laura Chism, Ellen Crawford and spouse Jim, along with five grandchildren, Carlin Maine and spouse Travis, Patrick Crawford and fiancé Lauren Abercrombie, Matthew Becker, Jeffrey Crawford, Katie Crawford, and great-grandson Aiden Crawford. John was preceded in death by his eldest son, Keith M. Chism.
The family would like to thank his caregiver, Patricia, who provided John with invaluable care, compassion, laughter, and friendship.
The family will receive visitors on Thursday, June 10th at 10:00 am at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, followed by a Funeral Liturgy of the Word at 11:00 am.
