He spent most of his life in Raleigh where he attended Ravenscroft School and graduated from Broughton High School in 1965 and NC State School of Design in 1970. He served in the Navy for three years as the Assistant Resident Officer in Charge of Construction at the Yorktown Naval Weapons Station. After completing his service, he returned to Raleigh and worked for over 40 years as an architect, retiring as a partner in the firm Smith Sinnett Architecture. In addition to the design process, John also enjoyed the actual construction process, having done the physical work as well as the design work for additions to both of his homes. As a young man, John enjoyed sailing, especially in his Jet 14 at Kerr Lake, as well as playing golf, a hobby he enjoyed throughout his life. He spent many pleasant hours at RGA enjoying the links and the companionship of his fellow golfers.
John is survived by his wife of 55 years, Mary Sue Lawrence Hitch, his daughter Jennifer Preston (Brian), his sons John David Hitch and Dr. William Joseph Hitch, both of Asheville, his grandsons Solomon Hunter Hitch and Luke Joseph Preston, his brother Dr. David Charles Hitch of Kettering, Ohio, his nephew Charles Joseph Hitch (Jaclyn), of Marietta, Georgia, and his niece Kathryn Hitch Rentz (Nathan) of Tipp City, Ohio.
