

Johnny was born on April 24, 1927 in Gainesville, Florida to Hubert Stone and Susie Flournah. Much of his younger years were spent in Clewiston, Florida where he had an unbreakable bond with his twin sister Ruby. He grew up surrounded by a large family of many stepbrothers and sisters.
As a teenager, Johnny enlisted in the military and became a MP in the Army. After the military, he moved to Philadelphia to join his twin Ruby. There he met and married the love of his life, Lela Mae Pearson in 1947. They were blessed with 67 years of marriage and raised 5 children. Johnny had a long career in Philadelphia at the main Post Office until he retired.
He loved to play poker, was good at horseshoes, was an excellent bowler who could've been a pro if given the opportunity.
In 1994 he and his wife moved to Raleigh, NC where he worked as a Greeter at the local Walmart to stay busy. He loved to watch Westerns and war movies. He was known for his sense of humor and was a man of a thousand stories. Over his lifetime, he went by a couple of nicknames - Stoney and Stoney Burke.
In 2014 Johnny became a widower as Lela preceded him in death. Even still, his family was his greatest joy and carried the role of father and grandfather with deep pride. In the last years of his life, he shared a home and life with Evelyn Aryee who also served as his caretaker.
Johnny is survived by five children. Johnny Jr.(Henriette), Stan(William), Kevin(Andrea), Tracy(Elizabeth), and Lisa(Darwin). Five grandchildren, Johnny III, Rasool, Jamal, Sammy, and Lia. And two great grandchildren, Danielle and Leela. He also leaves behind his twin Ruby Lee, his twin brother and sister, Vernell Robinson and Edell Johnson, his brothers Bobby Ray Flournah, Henry Flournah, and sisters Ruth Helen Johnson, and Annie Mae Flournah.
He was preceded in death by sisters Callie Flowers and Georgia Mae Williams. And brothers Sterling Johnson, Willie Johnson, Elijah Johnson, and Samuel Flournah.
He will be remembered for his enduring dedication to his loved ones and the quiet legacy of a life well-lived for nearly a century.
A service in his honor will be held on August 7, 2025 at Beacon Baptist Church, 2110 Trawick Rd. Raleigh, NC. at 11:00am.
The family welcomes donations to the American Heart Association in lieu of flowers.
