She was born October 24, 1944 in Key West, Florida to Samuel Fleming Padgett III and Nellie ShearinPadgett. Joanne grew up in North Carolina and lived most of her life in Raleigh before moving to Wake Forest in 2005.
A hard working, loving and devoted wife and mother, she is survived by her husband of 49 years, Donald R. Weisenborn; daughter and her spouse, Kimberly Weisenborn Durland and Dr. William F Durland Jr of Raleigh, NC; grandchildren, William F. Durland III, Zoe A. Durland and Elizabeth Ann Durland; her mother, Nellie Shearin Padgett of Raleigh, NC; her sisters and their spouses, Lynn Padgett Brown and Douglas M. Joanne received a BS in Early Childhood Education from Old Dominion University, Norfolk, VA in 1969 and a Reading Licensure from Fayetteville State University in 2004. Joanne had a God given talent for teaching. She taught for over 40 years in the Wake County Public School System. During her time as a classroom teacher, literacy teacher, and reading coach, she changed the lives of countless students. She also shared her passion for teaching with her fellow teachers and will be remembered as a special educator to all that knew her.
Joanne loved life. Besides teaching, she loved anything chocolate, visiting Williamsburg, VA, the NC mountains, a walk on the beach, family time at Lake Gaston, snow skiing trips, decorating her home for the seasons, entertaining friends and family, and shopping. She cherished her family above all, especially her three grandchildren, Will, Zoe and Elizabeth. Joanne grew up in the Baptist church and would often accompany her mother and cousin, Jane Riley, at the First Baptist Church in Raleigh. She attended White Memorial Presbyterian Church with her daughter’s family, where she particularly enjoyed Wednesday night suppers. She was most grateful to the leaders and friends that she met through the Cancer Companions class, who strengthened her faith during her battle with cancer.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, August 1 at 2:00 pm at White Memorial Presbyterian Church in Raleigh. The family will receive guests in the Jane Bell Space directly following the service.
