Karl Heinz Lack, age 83, of Raleigh, North Carolina, passed away on Friday, June 9, 2023. Karl was born in Germany on March 5, 1940. He immigrated from Germany when he was 18, and went to Montreal. From there, he went to Bermuda, where he met his wife, Mary. They moved back to Greensboro and were married in 1960. Karl worked at Sedgefield Inn for several years. Their sons, Todd, John, and Karl II were born in 1966, 1970, and 1973. After working in Ft. Lauderdale, Washington DC, and Greensboro, Karl started as the manager of a new hotel in the Triangle area, the Governors Inn, in 1971. After a successful career of almost 20 years, Karl left the hotel, and over the years bought a restaurant in Apex with his two youngest sons, Apex Wings. He and Mary bought and ran a boutique hotel in Greensboro, called "The Biltmore.” Around 2003, Karl and Mary moved back to Raleigh and retired.
In 2016, a few weeks after his wife Mary died of cancer, Karl had a stroke. He recovered mostly from it and led a much slower lifestyle until this past May, where heart trouble put him in the hospital, and he was diagnosed with cancer. He passed very soon after, on June 9th.
Karl is survived by his sons, Todd Lack, and his wife, Tammy, John Lack, and his wife, Jennifer, and Karl Lack, II, all of Raleigh; grandsons, Foster and Mitchell; niece, Arlette Lack of Spain, and nephew, Marcel Lack of Germany.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, June 21, 2023, at 2pm in the Chapel of Mitchell Funeral Home, 7209 Glenwood Avenue, Raleigh.
