Dr. Katherine Qubain Ernst passed away at Duke Regional Hospital in Durham, NC on January 11. 2025 at the age of 35. She is survived by her parents, John and Reem Ernst, and her sister, Christine Ernst.
Born November 17th, 1989 in Raleigh, North Carolina, she loved growing up in Raleigh and excelled at school, receiving multiple awards for academic achievement in high school. After graduating from Cary Academy, Katherine joined her sister at Swarthmore College, where she majored in Psychology and minored in English. She pursued work in psychiatry research at the University of Pennsylvania and later obtained a Doctor of Psychology degree from Widener University, with concentration in diversity and children, adolescents, and families. Her dissertation was a guide for schools on how to understand and work with parents of transgender students, and much of her clinical practice as a psychologist focused on providing care to LGBTQ+ youth and their families.
More notable than Katherine's achievements was the fabric of her soul: her kindness, and the way she always extended love and connection to the people around her. She loved her work and her clients, knew the vendors at her local farmers market by name, mentored young Chinese students learning English, passed out backpacks filled with supplies that she kept in her car to people experiencing homelessness, and never turned away from an animal that needed her.
Katherine's was a singularly tender spirit. She had a genuine compassion and understanding of people in all walks of life. Not one person who crossed her path could fail to see how deeply she loved and cared about every living being. Her wisdom, grace, and heart will be forever with us. She will be deeply missed.
