

Laura Elizabeth Long Sasser, 96, of Cary died on June 4, 2016. Mrs. Sasser was born in Hendersonville, NC to the late Richard Thomas and Lessie Dunn Long. The family later moved to Durham, NC where she graduated from Durham High School. She then enrolled at Averette Junior College, Danville, VA. While at Averette she took voice lessons, and when she returned to Durham, she sang soprano in the Temple Baptist Choir for several years. She enrolled in the Watts School of Nursing and received her RN degree. She and Joe were married in 1945 and moved to Raleigh so Joe could enter graduate school at NC State University. Mrs. Sasser was a longtime member of Forest Hills Baptist Church in Raleigh where she was active in Sunday School and the WMU. In 1993, she and Joe moved to Glenaire Retirement Community where she sang in the Glenaire Chorus and served on several committees. She loved music and encouraged all her children in music. She was a devoted wife and mother of four children often keeping them by herself for up to three months at a time while her husband Joe was overseas. She loved people and was happiest when she was doing something for others.
Laura was predeceased by her husband Joseph N. Sasser, Sr., two brothers, two sisters and a son-in-law Clinton Chappell.
She is survived by her daughter Gail Sasser Chappell, son Joseph Neal Sasser, Jr., and his wife Gail, daughter Betty Sasser Wilder and her husband Ted, and daughter Laura Sasser Young; 11 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and 4 great -great grandchildren.
A Celebration of life will be held at 1 pm Wednesday June 8, at the Glenaire Retirement Community, 4000 Glenaire Circle, NC 27511 with a graveside service to follow at 2:30 pm at Montlawn Memorial Park, S. Wilmington Street, Raleigh. Services will be officiated by Rev. Neal Sasser and Rev. Lee Pittard.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Laura’s name to Glenaire Foundation, Glenaire Retirement Community, 200 W. Cornwall Rd., Cary, NC 27511 or to the Forest Hills Baptist Church Missions, 3110 Clark Ave Raleigh, NC 27607.
