Brenda and Family, thank you so much for sharing Lee with us.  He (and you) helped us make some of our best friendships and memories during our time with Theta Tau.  Looking back through his life during the memorial slide show was truly inspiring.

 My name is Bonnie Jean (Frye) Peck, Lois Jean , your Dad and I were in grade school together in Hillsville.  My Dad ran the first hosiery mill there, his name was L.E. Frye. My Dad and your grandfather Haas knew each other.  Anyway, I just wanted to let you know how sorry I am to hear about the passing of your Dad.  I had a crush on Lee when we were in grade school!! Once again, I am so sorry and will keep you in my prayers.

I first met Lee at IBM while taking a course in solving integral equations. Lee joined the class mid-term and had not been part of the first set of lectures. I was amazed at his ability to solve the first assigned problems even though he did not use the same method that had been taught in the first session. I was very impressed with his intelligence and often came by his office to discuss problems I was facing in my job. He always enjoyed a good problem to solve and was always willing to get involved to help others.  He will be missed by many of us who came to know him. I will miss his sense of humor and his contagious laughter.

Lee....you sure impacted so many lives!  Lee and Brenda were one of the first at Crosspointe to love our family and truly get to know us.  We will miss you immensely but look forward to the glorious day when we will all be together!  Many prayers continue for your family.

You are in my thoughts and prayers, remembering many chats and laughs with you and Lee. On the occasion of our group of singles getting together for a special dinner onboard one of our many cruses together,Lee and yourself  were always game to join us for a few laughs and provide wonderful conversation. Please feel the hug extended to you by the GGC Group. He will be greatly missed.

I remember, when I served as an elder with Lee, an occasion in which a person in our community asked to meet with Lee and me. We didn't know what to expect, but I was glad that Lee was by my side. We met at the church in a private room and listened as this person unloaded a burden borne too long, one that was way too heavy for any person to bear, really. The trust placed in Lee and me was sacred to us. Lee and I reminisced about this experience a few times over the years since then. We came to understand that the act of confession brings healing to all involved, to the confessor and to those entrusted to listen. It was a privilege to serve with Lee Haas, and I will miss the man who loved our community so much.

Lee and I shared much. Both of us were Chairmen of the I.E.E.E Eastern Section and Brothers of Theta Tau Professional Society. His starting the Educational  Foundation of Theta Tau was a fabulous venture, helping many young engineers now and in the future. God Bless you for enriching many lives.  John C. Held, Raleigh N.C.

I remember Lee coming into Annchen's for his footcare and I called him easy feet, but he so enjoyed the service that when I massaged his legs and feet he was just a moaning . At first I thought I was hurting him, BUT that was not the case he enjoyed it so much that he was moaning .

I first met Lee's family because his daughter Karen worked with my mom at Glaxo many years ago. Then my love for Lee and Brenda grew as I saw them at church at Crosspointe. I never felt lonely during service because Brenda would let me sit next to her while Lee served. I love each one of your family and always will. Yours is one of the sweetest families I have ever known.

Brenda, Cindy and Rick, Our prayers are with you all as you celebrate the Lee's life. I was thinking back to all the fun Theta Tau days with you all. It is hard to believe it was so long ago. Lee was a phenomenal man and he will be missed. Rejoice in your memories and his wonderful life.  Love you all!!

I heard today from another Theta Tau brother today of Lee's passing.  My heart is  with Brenda, Cindy and Rick Tatem tonight.

In the early 90's, there was no bigger advocate for Theta Tau at NCSU than Lee.  I am grateful to have known him.

I first met Lee when I pledged Theta Tau as an engineering student at NCSU.  His input and guidance were always greatly valued in my years as a student and later alumni adviser.  I have many fond memories of attending fraternity meetings and trips with him.  Many others also benefited from his help and wisdom over the years and I am proud to call Lee a brother.  He has gone to a better place but he will be missed.

Lee was one of the first people at Crosspointe Church to welcome us. In the years that have followed, we have been incredibly blessed to be able to call him & Brenda friends.  We miss his warm smile, his wisdom, and his great sense of humor.  We know he is enjoying Heaven, and Heaven is enjoying him!!  Brenda, Cindy, Rick, Karen, Sunny, kids & family, you are close in our hearts and our prayers.

Meeting in water aerobics years ago has turned out to be such a blessing to me.  Brenda, you and Lee have set such a wonderful example of love, courage  and faith. I am humbled by your devotion to each other, your family, friends and God.  I  feel honored to have been loved by you both, laughed  with you and you let me love you back. Lee will be missed by all of us who had the blessing of knowing him. Love and prayers for your family.

I am a friend of Cindy's and a fellow Crosspointe member.  I mostly traded hello's and smiles with Lee but this is what I loved and treasured most. When we first started attending Crosspointe 10 years ago, I remember seeing both Brenda and Lee.  I felt so comforted (and still did up until the last time I saw the two of you together), because even though they were not the average age group at Crosspointe, it was like the "Grandparents" of the family, although they weren't that old then ;).  Lee always made Crosspointe feel so warm and inviting, like family!  He will be greatly missed!!  Big hugs to all of the family!!

Lee was a senior when I first came to Hillsville High School when I was in 7th grade.  He was one of the most popular guys in the school yet one of the friendliest.  He always had time for us "little kids."  I recall asking him how his induction cooking project worked and he spent the better part of an hour explaining it to me.  I didn't see him after he graduated, but I always knew he would grow up to be a true gentleman.  From reading these tributes, I see I was correct.  I am truly sorry to hear of his passing and regret not having known him in later years.

The year was 1999. I was recently engaged. And my finance and I, while still students at NC State (I was just finishing my freshman year) were looking for a church that we could call home long after our days as students were over. A (very) short search later, we landed at Crosspointe. By the end of that year, still engaged, still living on campus at NC State, we were interested in joining a life group (at the time they were called "gel" groups but that's not important).  The only group that was close to campus was led and hosted by Lee and his wife Brenda- proud member of an engineering fraternity and Jelly Bean's instructor, respectively. We contacted the church and signed up. 

This was a diverse group we had joined. Well, to be honest, it wasn't diverse until we joined it: me and Gwenn- a 20 something engaged couple, Lee and Brenda- a retired married couple, and 5 or six 40 to 50-year-old divorcees. 

While not always perfect, this group was our first stumbling step into community. We were not the same as the other people in that group. Different life stories. Different life stages. Different hopes and dreams. But that is what community is. Not a group of like minded people coming together to celebrate their like minded-ness. Community is people being together despite their differences (or maybe because of them) and celebrating that. I find this idea at the heart of what we now do in our lives.

Time went by. Gwenn and I were married. The "Prime Time Gel Group", as they began calling themselves after we left, ceased to be our home at Crosspointe. I began searching for a way to grow as a husband and soon-to-be father and, wouldn't you know it, ended up in a men's group led and hosted by Lee Haas. We met in the basement of their beautiful Raleigh home in the evenings while Brenda cooked dinner for her and her husband upstairs. I remember commenting on their home and he explained to me how they had bought it for next to nothing in the 1960s. He had watched as his friends and colleagues at IBM had "traded up with each promotion". But he had held tight. Renovated when necessary and, at that point, had owned his home outright for about 20 years. It was a lesson in patience, longevity, and forward thinking that I would never forget. It forms the basis for our mission here in Haiti where long-term commitment trumps any desire to be part of the latest trends in missionary work or development. 

My next lesson from Lee was about humility.  For a few years in the mid-oughts I served as an elder for Crosspointe Church. Lee was there along with a bunch of other great men. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to talk about this because I think elder meetings are kind of like Fight Club. But it's not a secret that Lee and Brenda, while beloved members of the Crosspointe Community, are not necessarily it's target audience. So in many discussions Lee would weigh in with a distinctly different opinion than the rest of us. When it came to worship, for example, Lee had a strong affinity for accapella songs out of a hymnal. But despite these differences, Lee never stopped sharing his opinion, which acted as a stabilizing force, an anchor in turbulent seas. I think he kept us from going off the deep end.  At the same time he was not stubborn in his opinion. These were not debates or negotiations but discussions to build consensus. And Lee was often the first to move off of his "position" and get behind an idea or decision that he would never have come to on his own. This is humility. Expressing your opinion. But submitting your opinion to the wisdom of the whole. And then faithfully backing those decisions as if they had been your own. That was Lee. My wife wishes that I could be like that. 

My short stint as a Crosspointe elder ended as we prepared to move to Haiti. With us leaving the country, we haven't seen a whole lot of Lee and Brenda over the last five years. But I tell you this: I have always felt like they were our biggest fans. To the end, every time I saw Lee he would remind me how proud he was of us. But I want to tell you how proud I am of him. He has lived a good life. He has left his mark. He has preceded us into the heavenly realm.

I worked very closely with Lee for most of the first five years of his IBM career.  Lee had an exceptional technical knowledge and skill and enjoyable personality that enriched my career.  Together we leaped a few moderately tall buildings.  Lee remained a good and loyal friend throughout my career.  Hopefully he will live on for a few more years at least in my memory.

Hello Brenda, i am so sorry about Lee's passing! Through Cindy's writings I have been with you in spirit through your journey. Wish I could be there friday, will be thinking of you all and remembering all the good times!

Your dad brought much joy to our congregation. I can't even count the number of times he greeted me with his sweet smile. He will always be a part of my Crosspointe memories.

What a guy! Intense, intelligent, passionate, faithful, joyous and a terror on the racquetball court. It is a joy and honor to call him brother in Christ and friend. He just took the lead.

So sorry to hear this sad news. Lee Haas and Brenda were always the first to greet us at Crosspointe with a smile, a hug, and a handshake. We were in their LifeGroup for a couple of years. So hospitable. Lee, your love of God and your still beautiful bride Brenda was always so evident. May you glory in God's presence, while you sing His praises for the rest of eternity! We will be looking for you when we join you in heaven with the rest of the saints. So happy to have known you in this life!

I met Lee when I was a Junior at Hillsville High School.  I had transferred from Woodlawn High School to Hillsville for two reasons.  The first was to take advanced math subjects not offered at Woodlawn and I was recruited to play football by Coach Jordan.  Lee and I along with Jerry Martin had a deep interest in science, math, electronics and other marvelous aspects of the Universe.  Jerry and Lee had constructed this marvelous machine called a Tesla Coil and they invited me to Lee's basement to see it.  I was amazed.  The Tesla coil would emit enormous discharges of electricity and disrupt all the TV's for several miles.  Lee and I attended several Science Fairs while in high school.

One of Lee's projects was an induction stove top which he exhibited at Roanoke College.  The device was a big hit but it consumed to much current and when he turned it on the electricity would go off due to open fuses.

Jerry, Lee and I bought several hundred old radios that had been traded in to the Guynn Hardware store in Hillsville for $50.  We had a lot of fun fixing and examining the construction of these old radios and learned a lot about electronics in the process.  Lee and I were roommates at Virginia Tech during our freshman year.  We were both in the Corp of Cadets and served as RATS together.

 

Lee, Jerry and I had a wonderful relaltionship which I will cherish for the rest of my life.  God bless you Lee and your Family, I know you now know the answers to all those questions about the Universe and Life that we used to ponder.

So sad to hear of your husbands passing Brenda.  I would see you both often at crosspointe or at a local restaurant after service in Sunday- though I don't know either of you well (we served at church many times though), it is apparent your love for each other and Jesus- I will be praying for your healing- and Lee's amazing time in heaven where he will be prepared to receive you there- live well till then- Lee and Jesus want us all to!

I am new to the Crosspointe Church community, but I am very aware of the presence of the Elders like Lee and their unrelenting support for our leaders, missions and church. My love and prayers are with you all. May you intimately experience SHALOM at the very moment you need it; reminders of Lee's love in your every day.

Lee will be so missed. I smile when I think of him...   Such a beautiful smile, a loving, caring, wonderful person.  He will be in our hearts forever tho.   Brenda, with Love, we are thinking of you and praying for you.

When I was a new hire at IBM in the 80s I remember seeing Lee's picture and accomplishments quite frequently on the announcement board.  Not knowing him, I always thought, "This guy must be a genius!!"  Years later, I definitely remembered him when my family came to Crosspointe in 2005.  What a great service to others Lee was, both technically and professionally, as well as for the work of the Kingdom.  He will be missed but his impacts will live on.  Our prayers are with your family.

Lee had a LOVING HEART and a HUGE SMILE.  He always welcomed us into the church on Sunday mornings.  He will be missed by our family.
