"Peg" or "Aunt Margaret”
Margaret Trammell Morton passed away in the wee hours of the morning on Thursday, August 18th at Brighton Gardens of Raleigh, NC. Born January 30, 1921 in Greenville SC, she was the second of six children born to the late Jerry Clyde Trammell and Eva Thackston Trammell.
Margaret grew up in Shelby, NC, graduating from Shelby High School and then Winthrop College in Rock Hill, SC. Returning home, she began her career in the savings and loan business with Cleveland County Savings and Loan Association where she became Treasurer. In 1952 Margaret came to Raleigh with First Federal Savings and Loan to train for the position of manager of the soon-to-be opened Cameron Village Branch. While waiting for the completion of the new branch, Margaret served as secretary to executive vice-president, R.D. Beam. It was her boss who introduced his new secretary to John G Morton, Jr., an “eligible but confirmed bachelor" who also was in the banking business with Wachovia Trust Department. Two years later in 1954, Margaret opened the Cameron Village Branch as manager. Three years later, in 1957, she was offered the position of "wife" by John G who declared "his footwork had run out"! Margaret happily accepted and became Mrs. John G. Morton, Jr., the best job she ever had, bar none!
Continuing her career with First Federal, in 1961 Margaret or "Peg" as she was also known, moved to the new downtown office on Salisbury St. Two months later she was named Assistant Vice President and later became one of the first female Vice Presidents of the company.
In addition, to her roles as wife and business woman, Margaret found a home at First Baptist Church where she remained a devoted member until her death. Her friends in the Livingston Johnston class were very special in her life and a support to her always.
She was faithful to her family, friends and to her God. She emulated the biblical instruction of Luke 12:48 which tells us that" to those whom much is given, much is expected. "
Her life was blessed. She was successful in the career she loved. She married the love of her life and, though he died far too early, he remained her only love forever. She golfed, she gardened, and enjoyed the fellowship of friends in the Green Thumb Garden Club. She spent happy times at her beach place with family and friends. Other times were enjoyed with family in Blowing Rock. She traveled extensively and once the days of travel ended, she found adventure in the books she loved to read. She was a strong, talented Christian woman who accepted and met the challenges life brought to her, always remaining grateful for her many blessings.
In addition to her parents and husband, Margaret was predeceased by three brothers, D.H. Trammell, Willis Trammell, Bruce Trammell and one sister, Gay Trammell Lancaster. She is survived by her brother J.C. Trammell Jr. and his wife, Barbara Dean of Brown Summit, NC and sister-in-law, Sybile Trammell of Gastonia, NC. Additionally she is survived by nephews Jerry Trammell and John Trammell, and nieces Susan Trammell-Merritt, Lynn Wilson, and Jody Langston. Also surviving are numerous great nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express their thanks to Barbara Dunn, Brenda Hill, Letitia Thorpe, Magnolia Jones, Monya Oglesby, and Stefani Wright, a special group of ladies who have been faithful companions to Margaret for the past several years. Also the family is appreciative of the support and care provided by the staff of Brighton Gardens.
A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at 11:00 am Thursday, August 25th at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 300 St. Mary’s Street, Raleigh. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at Brown-Wynne. There will be a private burial at Tranquility Cemetery in Granville County.
