Margaret Marshall Seaborn, a Mississippi native, born May 15, 1911 passed into eternity May 25, 2012 in Hendersonville, TN the home of her son Robert E. Marshall and daughter-in-law Jane. She loved receiving her church bulletin and appreciated cards from all her friends.
Margaret married her college math professor. They moved to Raleigh in 1936 where he became Senior VP and Actuary of Durham Life Insurance Company. Her second husband, Robert H. Seaborn, owned a pharmacy in Glenwood Village. Together they raised his two daughters.
Margaret thrived on her volunteer service throughout the community. She especially loved the people in her First Baptist Church where she was involved in numerous activities. A table dedicated in her honor is a tribute to that service. She organized the first volunteer services at Wake Memorial Hospital and arranged for the creation of a waiting room specifically for intensive care families. Margaret worked tirelessly with the Wake County Red Cross teaching junior volunteers and developing programs including an invitation accepted by Dr. Jonas Salk to speak in Raleigh. In 1959, North Carolina became the first state to require that all children be inoculated with the Salk vaccine.
Community groups elected her to officer positions in the Actuarial Society Auxiliary, Raleigh Women's Club, the Fireside Book Club, the Thimble Club and the Raleigh Music Club, which in recognition of her many years of devoted service made her a lifetime honorary member.
At a time when most women did not work outside the home, Margaret developed the first Welcome Wagon service in Raleigh, became a home economist who designed kitchens and wrote a weekly advertising column for the Raleigh News and Observer, By the Way, which she copyrighted. Mr. R. H. Carson, Advertising Manager, The News and Observer wrote her, "This column…was well written and presented to our readers many interesting facts in a clever and chatty manner…..We trust that you will continue…we are satisfied in our minds that the column is widely read." With all her activities, she remained family-oriented, valuing her church, friends and her Mississippi family.
She has three grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at Raleigh Memorial Park Cemetery, Saturday, June 2nd.
