Marie Green Merritt

Velma Marie Green Merritt, 97, passed away on January 10, 2016 in Raleigh, NC in her daughter and son-in-law's home where she has resided the last 8 years. She was born on January 28, 1918 in Geneva County and was a long term resident of Geneva and Houston counties as well as a lifelong member of Malvern Baptist Church.

She is predeceased by her husband Wallace M. Merritt and daughter Glynda Merritt Saunders. She is survived by her daughter Wynona Merritt Steele (Bud) of Raleigh, NC, son Wallace Casey Merritt of New Orleans, LA, and her grandchildren Patrick Saunders, Terri Jo Saunders Shepard (Rocky), Joseph Saunders (Kim) of Dothan, AL, and Devin Steele (Heather), Jason Steele (Amanda) and Susan Steele Carpenter (Scott) of North Carolina. She is survived by eleven great-grandchildren, other relatives and numerous friends who affectionately called her Mama Ree. To all who knew her, she was a cherished source of encouragement and love.

Visitation will be held on Friday January 15, 5:00-7:00 PM at Malvern Baptist Church. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday January 16 at 11 AM at Malvern Baptist Church.
