

Marion Whirlow Thompson, 94, of Raleigh, passed away on Saturday, January 2, 2016. She was born in Salisbury, North Carolina, daughter of the late Junius "Zed" and Ethel Shumaker Whirlow. Marion was a lifelong member of Hayes Barton Methodist Church where she was very active. She was a past President of the Altar Guild, the co-chairman of the wedding committee, a circle leader and a weekly volunteer as a church receptionist. Marion was a graduate of Catawba College and started her teaching career in High Point, North Carolina. Then, she later taught second and third grade for over 20 years at St. Timothy's School in Raleigh. In her spare time, she enjoyed reading, cross-stitching, needlepoint, and bridge. She always enjoyed her grandchildren and more recently, her great grandchildren.
Marion was predeceased by her husband of fifty-one years, James H. Thompson Jr., in 2001 and by her sister, Evelyn Lucille Faust.
She leaves behind her daughter, Elizabeth Thompson Woodson, and her husband, Bob, of Raleigh, and her son, James H. Thompson III, and his wife, Cynthia, of Zebulon; her grandchildren: Elizabeth Woodson Hardee and husband, Eric, and Susan Woodson Pilley and husband, Nic; and her great grandchildren: Andrew, Ashlyn and Alice Hardee.
The burial will be held Wednesday, January 6, 2016, at Raleigh Memorial Mausoleum at 11:00 AM. Her memorial service will follow at 1:00 PM at Hayes Barton United Methodist Church in Raleigh. Visitation will be held after the memorial service in the Fellowship Hall.
