Mary Anne Walsh Chism

She was born to Patrick Aloysius and Gertrude M Walsh and raised in Dubuque, Iowa. After graduating from St. Elizabeth Hospital School of Nursing in Chicago, she worked as an RN in several cities, including Chicago, Los Angeles and Endicott, NY where she met John, a young electrical engineer with IBM who became her husband of 67 years.

Mary Anne and John, along with their six children, moved to Raleigh in 1965. Her life centered on her faith and caring for her family and community. She volunteered with many organizations, including Our Lady of Lourdes Altar Guild and other parish ministries, Catholic Parish Outreach, and Meals on Wheels. She also spent time with her large network of friends enjoying bridge, golf and fellowship.

She and John enjoyed traveling after retirement, weekly trips to the library and strolling the stalls of the Raleigh Farmers Market. Mary Anne’s biggest pride was her family. Her kitchen was the cornerstone of Sunday dinners and every holiday and birthday celebration. A fantastic cook, her pot roast, gravy, brownies, and applesauce are legendary. She will be greatly missed.

She is survived by children: Jack Chism, Anne Becker, Laura Chism, Ellen Crawford (Jim); grandchildren: Carlin Maine(Travis), Patrick Crawford (Lauren), Matthew Becker, Jeffrey Crawford, Katie Crawford; great-grandchild: Aiden Crawford. She was excitedly awaiting the arrival of her second great-grandchild: Nora Maine. Mary Anne was preceded in death by her husband John and sons Keith and Tom.

The family will receive visitors on Monday, July 10th at 10:00 am at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, followed by a Rosary at 10:30 am and a funeral Mass at 11:00 am.
