Mary worked at the Hood Bank in Raleigh for several years after her marriage to Royce. She then went to work at the State Revenue Department where she worked until her retirement.
She was a charter member of the State Employees Credit Union and was an instrumental part of getting the organization started, and at the time of her death, she was their oldest member. She was a member of the Eastern Star organization.
At 95 years old, she was recognized by the News and Observer and the State Motor Vehicles Department as being one of the oldest drivers in the area. She wrote her own book of the early years of her life and lectured to several groups related to the book and her early life on the farm.
She spent much of her time in later life knitting and crocheting baby blankets for friends and acquaintances. If at times she would meet a young mother who was expecting a child, she would make a blanket for a complete stranger.
