

Maxine Harlow Spivey, 91, passed peacefully in her home on Saturday, June 21, 2025. Maxine was preceded in death by her parents Kathleen and Eugene Harlow and her siblings Grady Harlow, Eugene Harlow, Robert Harlow and Louise Leskawa.
Maxine was called to a life of service early and attended nursing school at Virginia Commonwealth University and East Carolina University. Maxine started her career in the Richmond area and later established a long and successful career in Raleigh. Maxine served as a Registered Nurse, Administrative Nurse, and Emergency Room Nurse at Wake Medical Center. Maxine also taught Nursing at Wake Community College. Known for her strength, skill, and compassion, she touched many generations with her selflessness and empathy.
Maxine was a devout, lifelong Christian and was an active member of Millbrook United Methodist Church. She served in many capacities; but her devotion to the Stephen Ministry at Millbrook UMC was exceptional. As a minister in the Stephen Ministry, she exemplified what it means to truly provide care and support to others.
Maxine’s love for all living things knew no limits. She loved birds, especially hummingbirds; flowers, and dogs. She had many cherished dogs that held special places in her heart.
Maxine was a creative and gifted artisan. She painted, created multi-medium sculptures, completed many needlework projects, crocheted, weaved with looms, played the dulcimer and the organ. Maxine also loved camping and traveling to the mountains.
Maxine is survived by her son, Phillip Shawn Spivey; grandsons Marcus and Connor Spivey; three great grandchildren, Daemon, Freya, and Ivy; lifelong friend Bill Sparks; and many beloved friends and neighbors.
Maxine will be remembered for her kind and generous spirit, her love for others, and her selflessness. Contributions to Millbrook United Methodist Church are welcomed.
A Celebration of Life service will be held in her honor on July 10, 2025 at 2:00 PM at Millbrook United Methodist Church, 1712 E Millbrook Rd, Raleigh, North Carolina, 27609.
