

Mrs. Mildred Felder Whitmire, of Raleigh, died April 25, 2021. She was born in Asheville, NC to the late Mildred Poindexter and Hugh Mellard Felder, graduated from Lee Edwards High School, and obtained her associate degree from St. Genevieve of the Pines. She married The Very Reverend Roland Jackson Whitmire, Jr., of Asheville, in 1948. They lived in Clemson, SC together as he finished his bachelor's degree from Clemson University and in Sewanee, TN while Roland earned his Master of Divinity from the University of the South. The family lived in Shelby, NC, Clemson, SC, and Rockingham, NC where her husband served Episcopal churches.
Mrs. Whitmire was active in the Girl Scouts, the Shelby Junior Charity League, ECW, and the Pink Ladies in Richmond County. After her husband Roland’s retirement from the ministry in 1986, they returned to Asheville where she became active in the Gov. Philip Ludwell chapter of Colonial Dames XVII, the Edward Buncombe chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution, and UDC chapter #104. After moving to Raleigh to live with her daughter and son-in-law, she transferred her memberships to the Sir Walter Raleigh chapter of Colonial Dames XVII, the Caswell-Nash Chapter of DAR, and UDC chapter #95. She also became a member of the Huguenot Society of South Carolina. Her hobbies were reading, sewing, genealogy, and gardening.
She is survived by her two daughters, Anne Mellard Whitmire Parker (Donald) of Atlanta, Louise Whitmire Catania (Joseph) of Raleigh; three grandchildren, Elizabeth Service Brooks (William) of Raleigh, Steven Andrew Parker (Shelby) of Atlanta, and Margaret Louise Service-Friedman (William) of DC; and one great-grandson, Henry William Brooks of Raleigh.
The burial service will be held at Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Raleigh, Saturday, May 1st at 3:00 p.m. The Committal will be held at Lewis Park, Asheville, on Monday, May 3, at 11:00 a.m. The family will be receiving at the home on Thursday, April 29 from 7:00-8:30 p.m., and an outdoor reception at the church following the service on Saturday.
