Muriel was born November 12, 1931, in Hutchinson, Minnesota to the late Dr. Ernest and Ruth Hanson.
She grew up in Salt Lake City, Utah. Her family moved to Pueblo, Colorado her senior of high school. She graduated and then attended Pueblo Junior College where she earned a two-year degree. It was in Pueblo that she met and fell in love with a baseball player, Jack D. Elkins, who played in the Brooklyn Dodgers organization. They married on October 15, 1951, and after several moves, settled down in Jack’s hometown of Greensboro, NC. Muriel had been born into a family of 5 children and married into a family of 10 children. It was no surprise that she and Jack would have a big family including 6 children of their own. She felt blessed to be part of such a huge extended family, which she welcomed with open arms.
Muriel wore many hats but most important to her was loving and raising her kids by her Christian faith; followed by being a devoted and loving wife, Mom, Mamo, sister, aunt, and friend. She was a “prayer warrior” long before the term became popular. Sundays were for church and family. She and Jack were long-time members of Proximity Methodist Church and later Christ United Methodist Church in Greensboro where they both sang in the choir.
Raising 5 sons and a daughter, Muriel was the quintessential “Bleacher Mom”. She settled into a wonderful life of cheering on her kids in football, basketball, baseball, cheerleading, swimming, and musical concerts.
Later she found time to work at Jefferson Pilot and Burlington Industries in Greensboro. After Jack’s passing in 1997, Muriel moved to Raleigh, NC. Once there she was employed by the Creech Law Firm. Later she met the second love of her life, Bill Teague, at a dinner party they both attended. They married in 2007. She and Bill spent 13 wonderful years together sharing life, love, and the blended Teague and Elkins families.
The simplest pleasures in life brought great joy to Muriel. She enjoyed family beach trips, Christmas visits to her parent’s home in Illinois, potluck dinners, butter pecan ice cream, vanilla milk shakes, family round robin letters, and dancing at her kids and grandkids weddings.
Muriel was preceded in death by her first husband, Jack; second husband, Bill; and her sister, Adelle Buffington.
She is survived by her children; Jack (Stormy) Elkins and wife Melanie of Longwood, FL; Liz Branch and husband Jim of Raleigh, NC; Danny Elkins of Richmond, VA; Hugh Elkins and wife Perri of Mooresville, NC; Rodney (Rod) Elkins and wife Chris of Chapel Hill, NC; and Mike Elkins and wife Stefini of Rogers, AR. Muriel is also survived by her brothers; Dave Hanson of Minnesota; Rod Hanson and wife Gail of Ohio; Dr. Mark Hanson of California.
Muriel (Mamo) gave her heart to 15 grandkids; Jack (Heather) Elkins, Leslie (Chad) Wehmeyer, Jessica (Clay) Ballard, Elkie (Ben) Wright, Caroline (Will) Craven, Joe Branch, Jamie (Adam) Bailey, Michael (Ivy) Elkins, Kathleen Elkins, Davis Elkins, Taylor Elkins, Anna (Jakob) Nielsen, Hanson (Catherine) Elkins, Greyson Elkins, and Sophie (Isaac) Gilliam. Mamo was also blessed with 16 great grandkids; Avery and Brooks Wehmeyer; Nate and Noah Elkins; Rhett Ballard; Liam, Bennett, Finn, and Ella Wright; Jimmy, Tommy, Savannah, and Walker Craven; Tate Jones; Mija Elkins; and Lizzie Bailey.
Muriel will be missed by her Teague family, Jane and Bill McRee, Diane Elkins, many nieces, nephews, and her devoted friend and caregiver, Vada Hall.
Loved ones can continue to honor Muriel’s legacy by finding joy in the simple things, loving one’s family and giving all the glory to God.
