
Nancy Wilds Coggeshall Hunter, 88, of Raleigh passed away on August 21, 2010 at the Springmoor Life Care Retirement Community. A memorial service will be held at Springmoor on Sunday, August 29 at 3:00 with visitation following the service. Private interment is planned at the Oakwood Cemetery Mausoleum in Raleigh.
Nancy, the daughter of James Warren and Grace Beard Coggeshall, was born on September 27, 1921 in Darlington, SC. She graduated from Winthrop College in 1942 where she majored in English and Journalism. Following graduation, Nancy was chosen by IBM to attend training in Ithaca, NY after which she was sent to Charleston, SC to work with the military’s computers where she met her future husband, Major John Weldon Hunter of Raleigh. They were married 57 years until John’s death in 2001 and had two children, Nancy Grace (Nan) and John Weldon Hunter, Jr.
Nancy always lived her life with enthusiasm, passion, wit and mental energy and never stopped learning and adapting to the times. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister and friend. She loved people and always remembered birthdays and other special occasions.
For 60 years, Nancy was a very active member of West Raleigh Presbyterian Church (WRPC) where she served as a Deacon, President of the Women of the Church (life member) and many other capacities. She also volunteered with Meals on Wheels for over 25 years both coordinating the church’s volunteers as well as delivering meals with John. The New Hope Presbytery recognized Nancy as WRPC’s “Outstanding Older Adult” for 2009. Nancy volunteered as a Girl Scout leader for troop #89 for many years. She also was a member of the Green Thumb Garden Club until she moved to Springmoor in 2000. While living at Springmoor, Nancy tutored employees enrolled in English as a Second Language.
Nancy taught key punch at Hardbarger Business College and computer programming at Automation Institute of Raleigh. In later years she worked in personnel placement she specialized in computer personnel.
In addition to her parents and husband, Nancy was predeceased by her brother, Alva C. Coggeshall. She is survived by her daughter, Nan Hunter Rogers of Greenville, NC; son, John W. Hunter, Jr and wife, Sallye of Raleigh; granddaughter, Margaret Rogers Mayo and husband Billy of Winterville, NC; grandson, Steve Rogers and wife Hannah of Creswell, NC; great-grandson Hunter Mayo and great-granddaughter, Ainsley Mayo of Winterville; sister, Helen C. Harvey and husband Brantley of Beaufort, SC; sister-in-law, Lillian P. Hunter of Raleigh; and many nieces and nephews.
The family expresses enormous appreciation to the dedicated staff at Springmoor, Hospice of Wake County and to her many devoted friends at Springmoor for the loving care and support provided during her illness.
