Born Alice Faye Murphy in Swissvale, Pennsylvania, Pat was affectionately known as “Patty” by her family and friends. An only child, she shared a deep and special bond with her mother, Sarah Belle Murphy, who instilled in her a lifelong love of beauty and the arts. Her mother’s untimely passing during Pat’s high school years left a lasting imprint on her heart.
Pat’s early passion for the performing arts led her to the stage, where she shone as a young actress at the Pittsburgh Playhouse and the Totem Pole Playhouse. Her love for theater endured throughout her life, enriching the lives of those around her and inspiring support for the arts in her community.
After moving to Gainesville with her husband, Bill Landis (later divorced), Pat raised three children while pursuing higher education. She earned a bachelor's degree in English from the University of Florida and later a master's degree (MSW) from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. As a Licensed Master Social Worker, Pat dedicated many years to family therapy, offering compassion and guidance to countless individuals and families.
A pioneer in wellness, Pat embraced yoga long before it became mainstream. She studied under renowned yogis and taught yoga in Gainesville for many years, with a special focus on elderly populations. Her innovative work was featured in "Yoga Magazine", highlighting her commitment to accessible and inclusive wellness practices and yoga for the elderly.
Pat’s love of art, culture, and reading took her to some of the world’s most celebrated museums and fueled her lifelong love for learning. She was also a passionate advocate for animal welfare, supporting local shelters and adopting pets from the Gainesville Humane Society throughout her life.
An ardent student of faith, Pat was a member of Trinity Methodist Church and, earlier, a longtime member of the United Church of Gainesville. Gainesville’s Temple of the Universe also served an important role in Pat’s spiritual path.
Pat was a devoted Florida Gators fan, cheering on her team with enthusiasm and pride.
Pat is survived by her children: William C. Landis III (Corey) and his wife Jacqueline Ferber (Jackie), Sara Landis, and Susan Landis (husband Louis Joseph Garcia). She was a cherished grandmother to six grandchildren: Scotia Blakey (husband Zane), Austin Camille Landis, Bailey Stein, Liv Garcia, Jesse Ean Landis, and Peter Garcia, and a new great-grandmother to Trey Blakey.
